The Wasteland is a region in the central portion of the Eastern Kingdoms which has seen very hard times recently. Through a combination of warfare, disease, and wild beasts, the population in this area has perished or fled, leaving population centers abandoned or ruined. While not particularly inhospitable, it is a dangerous place, with both men and beast as potential foes.
For some reason, the beasts in this region are of the more dangerous variety than other areas. Perhaps because they are more suited to the environment, which is somewhat warmer and dryer than surrounding regions. Perhaps it is because the populations living here have not had the strength or numbers to hunt them down. Whatever the reason, even goblins, ogres, and other more common fiends avoid this region for their own safety.
Below are details of the towns encountered by the party and their condition upon discovery:
Towns in the Wasteland
Large Town: 2,900 population
Townspeople and militia dead throughout the city. Many of the dead are dismembered, crushed, run through, or otherwise obviously injured by instruments of war. Many of the bodies have rotted through, although most still have a good bit of flesh stuck to the bones.
The stone walls are in good condition, but the gate has been broken into splinters.
The Fields outside the town and many of the town buildings are burned down.
Hamlet: 110 Population
Townspeople mangled and obviously killed in battle. Some of the bodies have been picked clean by vultures, but most have just begun to rot.
The wooden walls are in decent condition, but the gates are knocked in.
Small Town: 900 Population
Completely empty. Most of the buildings have been cleaned out as well, in an orderly fashion, not as though they had been raided or searched.
The stone walls are in excellent condition.
Most of the town has been burned down, but even the ashes contain very little rubble, as if the buildings we pretty much empty. Some of them are still warm.
Small Town: 1,000 Population
Townspeople and militia are dead throughout the city, but no apparent injuries. All of them are gaunt, and all are in a wide range of stages of decomposition. Many of them are lying in bed, and there are a multitude of new graves behind the church.
The wooden walls look pretty beaten up, as if they had resisted an army assault.
Village: 800 Population
Townspeople are dead throughout the town, but no apparent injuries. All of them are gaunt, and all are in a wide range of stages of decomposition. Many of them are lying in bed, and there are a multitude of new graves behind the church. Many of the bodies have been chewed on by some sort of animal.
The wooden walls around town have been torn down in many places by what appears to have been large creatures of some sort.
It appears as though a part of the town caught on fire, but after the people had died. Some of the bodies nearby are burned.
